WHAT GRAPE VARIETY?
A lot of wine buffs will try to tell you that the most important factor in the flavour of a wine is the place where the grapes were grown. Well, it may be for ‘wine buff wine’. But unless the grape variety is incredibly neutral (and some are), the different flavours of the different varieties are at the heart of the taste of a wine. Everything else flows from the nature of the grape variety.
VARIETAL LABELLING
It may seem weird, but until the New World came barging in, very few wines mentioned their grape variety on the label. So that meant choosing a wine was often like taking a flying leap into a dark pit. With a label full of uninformative terms, often referring to obscure parts of their country of origin and everything in a foreign language, no wonder wine-drinking as a popular pastime, enjoyed by the majority of the population, took so long to take off.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that any great attempt to make wine easy to understand took place. Then the Californians and the Australians cut through all the mystifying gobbledegook with one gorgeous, thrilling stroke. If genius is the art of stating the obvious, this was the purest genius of all – just tell everybody what grape variety the wine is made from. Throw away all the stuffy old terms and fanciful titles – just put the name of the grape variety right in the centre of the label.
So simple. All grape varieties taste different. Put the name on the label so that you can tell straight away if it’s likely to be a wine you’ll enjoy. And if you’re beginning to learn about wine from scratch, learning about the different flavours each grape variety has is the easiest and quickest route to wine knowledge and the surest way to make sure you order a wine you like.
